Theory:

Another word that is very often tested in sentence completion exercises is AS, because it is used in many different types of word groupings:


It can be used to show comparison:

He is as big as his brother.


It can be used to show that something is already known:

As you know, I won't be available tomorrow.


It can be used to explain how something is done:

I cooked the meat as you asked me to.


It can be used to explain how something appears:

She looks as if she is ill.


Other common structures are:


Known as:

These people are known as the players.


As well as:

I invited Joe as well as his cousin.


Used as:

He used the knife as a screwdriver.


Remember as:

My father is remembered as being very strict.


as often as:

I don't see my family as often as I would like.


as hard as:

This exercise is not as hard as I expected it to be.


as early as:

I can't come as early as that.


such as:

I need new things to do, such as yoga.


as he was falling:

He threw the ball just as he was falling.


as you won't talk:

He is leaving as you won't talk to him.


do as the Romans do:

When in Rome do as the Romans do.


as much:

I can't pay as much as that.


as long as:

I won't help as long as you smoke.


as if:

It's not as if you didn't know I would be here.


as though:

I feel as though I have met you before.


the same as:

Is this food the same as the food your sister makes.


as soon as:

I'll call you as soon as I finish.
