1.2 Reading Part 2

The objective:

To learn how to identify key information from two sources, and then compare this information to make correct decisions, while not allowing confusing information to affect the accuracy of the decisions.

As the PET exam is preparation for more advanced exams like the FCE, the CAE and the CPE, basic skills like underlining all key information to be used will be developed here.

In this exercise we are given 5 sets of people and told what they are looking for. We are also given 8 sources of the things the people are looking for and we are required to identify which source would best suit each person or people.

Let's look at a typical exam question:

PLACES
A - DINOSAUR PARK
As you wander the trails you'll encounter several dinosaurs! Life-size statues of dinosaurs, that is. But they're amazingly life-like and dino-fanatic kids love them. Most, including T-Rex, Iguanodon, Coelophysis and Ornithomimus, lived in Texas during the Cretaceous or Jurassic periods. After you spot all the dastardly dinos, try your hand at digging for fossils in the large sand table, and stop by the gift shop for some cool souvenirs.

B - PHOTOGRAPHY OPEN DAY
Our Photography open day will give you the technical know-how to start making the most of your digital SLR, whilst helping you develop a creative approach to photography. This hands-on, opportunity will help you explore the art of great photography, covering a broad range of subjects and providing a dynamic learning experience. You will leave with an in-depth understanding of the photographer's process.

C - SPACE MUSEUM
The National Space Centre really is a visit that is out of this world. Take a journey through out themed galleries, stopping at over 150 interactive experiences. Sit back in awe in the Uk's largest planetarium as we take you on a voyage of discovery in this 360 degree fulldome experience. The National Space Centre is an all weather attraction for all the family. On site we have over 400 parking spaces, restaurant, shop and all the facilities you would expect from a world class attraction.

D - MAKEUP WORKSHOP
Our makeup school open day is a very relaxed one. The emphasis is on your seeing the school on a normal day. For the students it is having an extra day to pick up skills that may be lacking. Projects are set up for the visitors to work on. We will have experts on hand, to discuss technical questions and also to share with us their latest film projects, and they are always looking for talented newcomers.

E - ROBOT EXHIBITION
Robots are here and will only be taking industries to new levels of efficiency. Centreville Robotics Team will be showcasing their championship robots at Coding Dojo. You will have a rare and up close opportunity to see a world class robotics demonstration including two different robots. You will also learn what it takes to build a machine of this capacity, and, of course, meet the all star team behind the machines. Come join us and enjoy a day of science, development, and engineering at its finest.

F - WAX MUSEUM
If you've ever dreamed of seeing a star or being a star, you need to visit our Wax Museum. Get up-close and personal with handmade wax models of celebrities for fun photos, where you choose the poses, and learn little-known facts about their pets, pet peeves, and accomplishments. For example, did you know that as a child, Salma Hayek had a pet tiger named Rambo that slept in her bedroom? We are also on the lookout for young talent to join our team, so if that's you, contact us.

G - DANCE EXHIBITION
We are the biggest and best dance event, celebrating all forms of dance and the performing arts across three amazing days. Our exhibition brings together dance schools, dance enthusiasts, professionals and iconic performers from around the world. Watch breath-taking Main Stage performances, take part in dance classes, discover dance career opportunities, brush up on your acting and vocal skills in performing arts workshops and shop for all your dance wear needs.

H - PROFESSIONAL KITCHEN
This exhibition provides an opportunity for all chefs on all levels to showcase their skills where some of the best restaurants in the country are situated. You can experience star chefs with a proven track record and young talents live in action in a completely fitted-out show kitchen. You will have the chance to express your own ideas, dreams and visions. Benefit from the know-how that the professional chefs will be passing on.
PEOPLE
1 - MEGAN
Megan and her younger brother are dinosaur crazy, and they know the names of each member of their extensive collection. What is really fascinating is that Megan made each model by hand, and would love the opportunity of doing that for a living.

2 - LINDA
Linda is 17 and has been dancing since she was six. She loves the feeling of dance, but sees it more as fun than something to do for a living. She also enjoys cooking, but if she had the choice, she would like to work in the movies as a makeup artist.

3 - ROBERT
Robert plays football and rugby very well and was mad about dinosaurs as a kid. He then went through a phase where he couldn't get enough of space ships and aliens, but now he spends all his free time with his mother, who runs her own restaurant, and says he cooks better than she does.

4 - SUSAN
Susan has always been good at sport, but her parents want her to study engineering and get involved with robotics or become an aeronautical engineer. They don't realise she dreams of a very different life as a dancer, performing on stage with the best.

5 - JIM
Jim is 16 and his teachers say he is good at science. He recently helped his younger brother with the robot he got for his birthday. He also wanted to be an astronaut when he was younger, but now he feels creative and spends a lot of time with his camera, dreaming of going professional.

The Method:

Look very carefully at what the first person wants and separate information which tells you what they want from information meant to confuse you:

1 - Megan and her younger brother are dinosaur crazy, and they know the names of each member of their extensive collection. What is really fascinating is that Megan made each model by hand, and would love the opportunity of doing that for a living.

Ask yourself what Megan wants:

What is really fascinating is that Megan made each model by hand, and would love the opportunity of doing that for a living.

All the other information is meant to distract.

So, write each piece of key information in a list, each item under another:

MEGAN

love the opportunity of making models by hand for a living.

LINDA

would like to work in the movies as a makeup artist.

ROBERT

spends all his free time cooking and cooks better than his mother.

SUSAN

dreams of life as a dancer, performing on stage with the best.

JIM

spends a lot of time with his camera, dreaming of going professional.

So we have isolated only the key information we need for each person.

Now we look what each source has and our intention is to find anything they may have which the people are looking for.

This doesn't have anything useful for our people, so we look at the next one:

B - PHOTOGRAPHY OPEN DAY

Our Photography open day will give you the technical know-how to start making the most of your digital SLR, whilst helping you develop a creative approach to photography. This hands-on, opportunity will help you explore the art of great photography, covering a broad range of subjects and providing a dynamic learning experience. You will leave with an in-depth understanding of the photographer's process.

This is what Jim is looking for, so we put a B next to his name in the list below:

JIM

spends a lot of time with his camera, dreaming of going professional.

B

Now we look at the next source, and do the same:

C - SPACE MUSEUM

The National Space Centre really is a visit that is out of this world. Take a journey through out themed galleries, stopping at over 150 interactive experiences. Sit back in awe in the Uk's largest planetarium as we take you on a voyage of discovery in this 360 degree fulldome experience. The National Space Centre is an all weather attraction for all the family. On site we have over 400 parking spaces, restaurant, shop and all the facilities you would expect from a world class attraction.

It doesn't seem to have anything useful, so we go to the next one:

D - MAKEUP WORKSHOP

Our makeup school open day is a very relaxed one. The emphasis is on your seeing the school on a normal day. For the students it is having an extra day to pick up skills that may be lacking. Projects are set up for the visitors to work on. We will have experts on hand, to discuss technical questions and also to share with us their latest film projects, and they are always looking for talented newcomers.

This would suit Linda, so we put a D next to her name in the table below:

LINDA

would like to work in the movies as a makeup artist.

D

Now we look at the next one:

E - ROBOT EXHIBITION

Robots are here and will only be taking industries to new levels of efficiency. Centreville Robotics Team will be showcasing their championship robots at Coding Dojo. You will have a rare and up close opportunity to see a world class robotics demonstration including two different robots. You will also learn what it takes to build a machine of this capacity, and, of course, meet the all star team behind the machines. Come join us and enjoy a day of science, development, and engineering at its finest.

There isn't anything here for our people, so we go to the next one:

F - WAX MUSEUM

If you've ever dreamed of seeing a star or being a star, you need to visit our Wax Museum. Get up-close and personal with handmade wax models of celebrities for fun photos, where you choose the poses, and learn little-known facts about their pets, pet peeves, and accomplishments. For example, did you know that as a child, Salma Hayek had a pet tiger named Rambo that slept in her bedroom? We are also on the lookout for young talent to join our team, so if that's you, contact us.

This could be perfect for Megan, so we put an F next to her name in the table below:

MEGAN

love the opportunity of making models by hand for a living.

F

Now we look at the next one:

G - DANCE EXHIBITION

We are the biggest and best dance event, celebrating all forms of dance and the performing arts across three amazing days. Our exhibition brings together dance schools, dance enthusiasts, professionals and iconic performers from around the world. Watch breath-taking Main Stage performances, take part in dance classes, discover dance career opportunities, brush up on your acting and vocal skills in performing arts workshops and shop for all your dance wear needs.

This would be perfect for Susan so we put a G next to her name in our table:

SUSAN

dreams of life as a dancer, performing on stage with the best.

G

And Finally:

H - PROFESSIONAL KITCHEN

This exhibition provides an opportunity for all chefs on all levels to showcase their skills where some of the best restaurants in the country are situated. You can experience star chefs with a proven track record and young talents live, in action in a completely fitted-out show kitchen. You will have the chance to express your own ideas, dreams and visions. Benefit from the know-how that the professional chefs will be passing on.

This is exactly what Robert is interested in so we put an H next to his name.

ROBERT

spends all his free time cooking and cooks better than his mother.

H

Our table now looks like this:

MEGAN

love the opportunity of making models by hand for a living.

LINDA

would like to work in the movies as a makeup artist.

ROBERT

spends all his free time cooking and cooks better than his mother.

SUSAN

dreams of life as a dancer, performing on stage with the best.

JIM

spends a lot of time with his camera, dreaming of going professional.

B

These then are the correct answers for this exercise.

Important Note:

As you identify all this key information, it is extremely important that you underline it, which will help you when you finish and need to check your work before going on to the next exercise.

When you finish, your page should look like this:

Sometimes the people want more than one thing. Let's look at the case of a family going to the beach:

The Jones family want a beach near the train station, somewhere for children to play, they want to learn to swim, somewhere to have lunch and shops to buy souvenirs. (after removing distracting information)

Their case should be presented like this, with each item listed one below the other:

The Jones family
a beach near the train station
somewhere for children to play
learn to swim
somewhere to have lunch
shops to buy souvenirs

Then it may happen that more than one place has what they are looking for, so put them all in:

The Jones family
a beach near the train station
somewhere for children to play
learn to swim
somewhere to have lunch
shops to buy souvenirs

-
A, C,
A, D,
A,
A, B,
A, E,

The place which has most of what the people are looking for, the letter which comes the most often, here the letter A, is then the correct answer.
